Quarantine Life

The Saturday after Rocky was adopted I went to pick up my new foster. I found out I was getting a beagle mix named Victor. I looked him up and he was adorable. I got to transport early and could not wait to meet my new boy. Transports are working a little differently right now. We are being called up one at a time to get our pups so we can maintain social distancing as much as possible. I was waiting and they started calling my name. I got up there and Victor was trying to break out of his crate. But then once he got off the van he did not want to come out of the crate. We finally got the poor guy out and he was terrified. I was afraid of him trying to get away so we did not stop for a potty break. We got in the car and drove home. We got home and again poor Victor did not want to come out of the crate in my car. I got him out and into my back yard. He did his business and met his sisters. After that it was bath time. Victor was a smelly boy. I normally go to Pet Supplies Plus and ...

Saying goodbye

It has been a bumpy couple of weeks here. I have been on an emotional roller coaster (and not just because of what is going on in our world). I had gotten an email showing interest in Rocky. I emailed back to get more info, but didn’t get a reply so I moved on and didn’t think more about it. About a week later I get a reply stating they were still interested and had not seen the email I sent. We talked on the phone and decided to set up a meet and greet. The family lived in a town house so would have to walk Rocky (no worrying about fence jumping) and they had no other animals. I was a little worried about being in a townhouse with Rocky’s barking, but they did not think it would be an issue. It was a family of 4: mom, dad, adult daughter, and an autistic son. I was not sure how Rocky would be with the son, but he lived with 2 little boys, so thought it should be ok. We went for the meet and greet on a Tuesday afternoon. Rocky was very anxious the whole time we were with the family...

School night

Tonight we had an adoption event that was a little different. A school was having a fun fair and invited us to bring adoptable dogs. I had done this event last year with my foster, Boomer. Boomer was a 90 pound blue tick coonhound. He was great. He loved people, but got over excited and would try to jump up (and being 90 pounds that was not good). Because of this a lot of the kids avoided him.  I will go into more about Boomer later, he was a fun dog. This year I took Rocky (who I may not have made clear is the same as Loki, same dog different name). Rocky did great. He really does love kids. His tail was going pretty much the whole time. Some of that had to do with the goodies the kids were carrying. He tended to be a favorite of the kids too. One little boy spent most of the event with him and was trying to talk his mom into adopting. His mom told him she would have to have a family discussion. They weren’t too keen on the fence jumping. They also have a cavalier King Charles s...

Foster Failure?

Image
Life has been a little crazy lately. We went on vacation and are just getting back to a routine. I have not had much time for blogging. Today was another adoption event and I am feeling a little down. Most of the dogs at the event today were small dogs or puppies. Both of these tend to grab people’s attention. Poor Rocky did not get a lot of people coming up to say hi, and no one interested. Sometimes I feel defeated with him. I see all the other dogs getting adopted, and here he stays. I wonder if I should just adopt the poor guy so he can have a family.  You may ask why I don’t do that? This guy has been through a lot, he is comfortable at my house, doesn’t it make sense to let him stay? I have put serious thought into it. The thing holding me back is if I do adopt him there will be no more fostering, at least for the moment. We have 2 dogs of our own. 3 dogs is ok, but the couple times I have had 4 dogs here it gets crazy. Our house is too small. So Rocky is pretty much our ...

Continuing to learn

It has been a busy week. I have been debating about what to post next. I was thinking of introducing you to foster dog number three. I have changed my mind, however, after the interesting seminar I went to Saturday. Rover Rescue is now working with Rock Kennel in Shabbona. Lauren, the trainer there, offered a class on dog to dog interactions. Rover Rescue encouraged all of its foster parents to attend. I signed up and was super excited to go. Unfortunately the weather Saturday decided not to cooperate, the class I had gotten signed up for was postponed until next week. I was bummed because I have to work next Saturday and would not be able to attend the rain (snow) date. I sent Lauren an email to see if there was anyway I could do one of the classes earlier in the day that had not been postponed. She wrote back that she had a cancelation in her 9 am class. Sweet! I am so happy I got to go. I learned so much. I did not realize there are different play styles in dogs and that because...

A good deed

Originally today’s post was going continue with my previous foster dogs, but something happened today that I wanted to share. Today we had an adoption event. Rover Rescue is all foster based, we do not have a central location. To help get our dogs out for the public to view we hold events where we bring out the foster dogs to preset locations (usually a pet store). Today’s event was at a Petsmart we frequent often.  We set up our chairs inside and hang out with the dogs. When people come up we tell them about our foster. My current foster is a dog named Rocky, although he has gone by Loki as well. He was originally my 4th foster dog. We met is September of 2018. He eventually found a family in March of 2019. In August of 2019 Rocky was returned for jumping his new family’s fence on a weekly basis. He has been with me since. He is a good dog, but has his quirks. It is definitely taking awhile to find his perfect fit. Adoption events can be stressful, both for the dogs and th...

Foster #2

Image
I made it through my first foster in one piece. If I can get all my fosters adopted this quickly, think how many I could save. The transport comes in every 2 weeks, so I now had a week to wait before getting my next foster. I could look through dogs available to pull however, so I did. I put in my request for what I was looking for: male, over 6 months, under 50 pounds. I found out I was getting a super cute 7 month old hound/lab mix named Mickey. The day came to go get my new boy. Mickey ended up being more like 60 pounds and he was a shepherd mix. He was gorgeous and so sweet! Some people told me he looked like a Dutch shepherd. Mickey was a little more than my family bargained for. He had tons of energy and did not realize his size. He tried to play with the smaller dogs, but ended up intimidating them. He bounced around the house and didn’t care what furniture got in his way. I had to get a new locking garbage can because he got into the garbage. He counted surfed and stole foo...
