Quarantine Life

The Saturday after Rocky was adopted I went to pick up my new foster. I found out I was getting a beagle mix named Victor. I looked him up and he was adorable.

I got to transport early and could not wait to meet my new boy. Transports are working a little differently right now. We are being called up one at a time to get our pups so we can maintain social distancing as much as possible. I was waiting and they started calling my name. I got up there and Victor was trying to break out of his crate. But then once he got off the van he did not want to come out of the crate. We finally got the poor guy out and he was terrified. I was afraid of him trying to get away so we did not stop for a potty break. We got in the car and drove home.

We got home and again poor Victor did not want to come out of the crate in my car. I got him out and into my back yard. He did his business and met his sisters. After that it was bath time. Victor was a smelly boy. I normally go to Pet Supplies Plus and use their self serve tubs. That could not happen. We used my bathtub. It was quite the experience. I was soaked at the end, but Victor smelled much better.

Victor was very timid the first couple days home. He would curl up in his dog bed and just lay quietly. After 2-3 days he started coming out of his shell. He would try and play with his foster sisters, and was sad they would not play back. He learned about toys and started raiding the toy bin. He was an absolute sweet heart. He would come up on the couch with me and snuggle. He was still scared of Joe.

It wasn’t long and Victor had his first meet and greet. It was 2 men that wanted to adopt him. I did warn them that Victor seemed more timid around men, but they really wanted to try. I met them out front with Victor. It did not start out well. Victor was trying to avoid them and even slipped his harness to get away. We moved to the fenced in back yard. Victor was still pretty shy. After awhile we all decided it was not going to happen. We all felt bad.

I knew I had to work on socializing Victor. With the shelter in place order that was hard. Rover Rescue is not having events. I can’t take the dogs out anywhere. So I improvised. Victor went to work with me a couple of times. He also went to go meet my mom and sister. He was still shy, but getting better.

I had many calls and texts about Victor. I had a family of 6 that was very interested in him. There were 4 adults and 2 older kids in the house. I wasn’t sure how Victor would go with so many people, but we set up a meeting. Victor was very nervous when we arrived. He kept trying to hide behind me. Since there were not too many time constraints we hang out with the family quite some time. There was a 10 year old girl who loved Victor; even though he was the first one they had met, she wanted him. She worked with him, walked him around on leash, and just sat with him. They ended up taking Victor into the house. I stepped out to see how Victor would do without me. When I came back in Victor was in the couch between the two kids giving kisses. The family wanted to adopt Victor. I agreed. I could tell they would give him the love he needed.

As we filled out paperwork Victor started walking around on his own. He was even wagging his tail. Victor jumped up on his new mom and gave her kisses. Victor was home. I have gotten a couple updates since. He has made friends with his new grandma (who is not a dog person). I am just so happy for him and his new family. Another happy ending.
