A good deed

Originally today’s post was going continue with my previous foster dogs, but something happened today that I wanted to share.

Today we had an adoption event. Rover Rescue is all foster based, we do not have a central location. To help get our dogs out for the public to view we hold events where we bring out the foster dogs to preset locations (usually a pet store). Today’s event was at a Petsmart we frequent often.  We set up our chairs inside and hang out with the dogs. When people come up we tell them about our foster.

My current foster is a dog named Rocky, although he has gone by Loki as well. He was originally my 4th foster dog. We met is September of 2018. He eventually found a family in March of 2019. In August of 2019 Rocky was returned for jumping his new family’s fence on a weekly basis. He has been with me since. He is a good dog, but has his quirks. It is definitely taking awhile to find his perfect fit.

Adoption events can be stressful, both for the dogs and the handlers. Rocky has been to more adoption events than we care to count. He does not always show well. He is not a dog to run up to people begging for love. He is rather aloof sometimes. He also has to be watched closely, as he has been known to go after other dogs. Due to this he also has to wear a gentle leader while at events. He is not a fan of this. Rocky also has the added stress of car rides. Rocky loves getting in the car, but once we are driving his anxiety gets the better of him. He has to be crated so as not to be a distraction, but the he barks the whole time.

We had to run to the shed where Rover keeps their supplies to stock up on supplies we need. I took Rocky with so we could head to our event right after. I had tried some calming treats for the ride, but they didn’t help much. It was a very stressful drive.

We were both on edge when we got to Petsmart. Rocky was ready to go out and explore, not be stuck greeting people. We settled in however and waited for people to come. A woman came by and said she wished she could adopt, but she had one already. I joked with her about 2 is not much more work. Unfortunately she has a husband with allergies and needs a non shedding dog. She continued on with her shopping. A little bit later she came back with a gift card for Rocky to spend. I was so touched she would do this for my boy. Once she left I said about sharing with the other fosters, but was told by another foster mom that it was for Rocky. So we had a shopping spree to look forward to.

The adoption event went as most do. People would stop to pet Rocky, but no real interest. Pretty soon the event was over. There was no interest in Rocky, but we still had some money to spend.

I took Rocky down the toy aisle. He sniffed everything, but did not pick any. I decided to try some clearance items so we could get more out of the gift card. We found 2 toys, a bag of salmon jerky, and a Himalayan chew bone. It was money well spent.

The Himalayan chew was amazing on our car ride home. Rocky was quiet most of the ride, and he still has some left for our next ride. It was much more relaxing than the trip there. Rocky played with his toys when we got home, and now is sleeping on the couch.

Even though there was no adoption today, it was a good day. Rocky wants to thank his new friend!
